Mapleton Public Schools

Overview

Our team provided engineering consulting services to diagnose existing building issues on Mapleton’s publicly funded K-12 campus consisting of four schools that all have variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems with dedicated outdoor air (DOAS) energy recovery ventilators and boiler plants.
The four buildings that comprise this campus are the North Valley School for Young Adults, Clayton Academy, Anythink Library, and Mapleton Expeditionary School of the Arts. The existing facilities were in use for nearly a decade and experienced a number of issues with their mechanical systems.

Solutions

We conducted in-depth mechanical assessments, energy modeling, and retro-commissioning across all four facilities to identify root causes of performance issues. The solution included replacing the existing VRF systems with high-efficiency water-source heat pump systems and installing new building automation controls for precise temperature and air quality management.

Results

Through these upgrades, the Skyview Campus achieved a 49% reduction in energy use intensity—dropping from 68.8 to 35 EUI—and is projected to save more than $40,000 annually on energy costs for the first completed building alone. The improvements have significantly enhanced occupant comfort, stabilized temperature control, and reduced maintenance burden for facility staff.
